What Are Gas Fees?
Gas fees are payments made to compensate for the computing energy required to process transactions on Ethereum and other EVM-compatible blockchains. Every operation — from a simple token transfer to deploying a smart contract — requires a certain amount of gas.
Gas fee = Gas Limit × Gas Price (in Gwei). Since the EIP-1559 upgrade, pricing includes a base fee (burned) and a priority tip (paid to validators).
Gas Limits by Transaction Type
ETH Transfer: 21,000 gas — simplest operation
ERC-20 Transfer: ~65,000 gas — token contract interaction
DEX Swap: ~130,000–200,000 gas — routing + AMM logic
NFT Mint: ~150,000–250,000 gas — depends on contract
Contract Deploy: 300,000–1,000,000+ gas
How to Reduce Gas Fees
Transact during off-peak hours (weekends, late UTC nights)
Use Layer 2 networks — Arbitrum or Optimism are 10-100x cheaper
